A coalition of half of the nation’s attorneys general wrote a letter to Columbia University leaders raising concerns about antisemitism on campus and urging them not to divest from companies with ties to Israel.
Spearheaded by Alan Wilson of South Carolina and Tim Griffin of Arkansas, the letter condemned recent pro-Palestinian actions on campus, especially ones that appeared to celebrate Hamas’s deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israeli civilians.
“Against that backdrop, we commend Columbia University for its decision earlier this year to not divest from Israel. And we urge your administration to continue to maintain that position despite blatantly antisemitic pressure from some pro-Palestinian student groups. While balancing student speech rights against credible threats to people and property can be a delicate task, declining to divest should be an easy call,” the letter reads. All of the signatories are Republicans.
A similar letter was sent to Brown University just before that university voted on divestment; its trustees ultimately voted against divesting.
