If the comments about higher education that President-elect Donald Trump made on the campaign trail are anything to go on, it’s likely the Education Department in his second administration will be much more focused on postsecondary education than his first.
In the run-up to the presidential inauguration on Jan. 20, Inside Higher Ed’s editor in chief, Sara Custer, and news editor, Katherine Knott, discuss President-elect Trump’s policy agenda and how it could affect universities and colleges in the latest episode of The Key, Inside Higher Ed’s news and analysis podcast.
Katherine and Sara share what sources are telling IHE reporters about education secretary nominee Linda McMahon. They discuss the key players in the Republican-led Senate and House and what their policy histories could tell us about where they might focus their attention.
They also point out what actions institutions have already taken in anticipation of the incoming administration, including shuttering DEI programs and ending academic partnerships with China.
It’s anyone’s guess what the administration’s policy priorities will be, but Katherine shares what she and Inside Higher Ed journalists will be looking for to get a sense of which way the wind might be blowing for higher ed on Capitol Hill.
