The University of Wisconsin at Madison has removed its chief diversity officer, LaVar Charleston, from his post following an internal financial review, the university announced Wednesday. Charleston will return to his previous role as a clinical professor in the School of Education.

The institution’s provost, Charles Isbell Jr., will serve as acting director of the Division of Diversity, Equity and Educational Achievement.

“An ongoing internal review of DDEEA’s finances has revealed areas of concern about financial operations and fiscal judgments in the division,” Isbell and Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin said in a statement. “On Jan. 7, the unit’s leadership was notified that fiscal authority of DDEEA would be shifting to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration.”

According to The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the fiscal review was launched in preparation for an upcoming state audit of the UW system’s DEI offices. The review is ongoing.

All DDEEA programs will continue as planned, the statement noted.
