I have an idea for a new book-centric platform for higher ed.
The platform would fill the following seven needs.
A place:
- for academics to share the books they're reading.
- for academics to build communities and promote books they have written.
- for university presses to promote their books.
- to aggregate reviews of books written by academics.
- that academics can write and share book reviews.
- for academics and editors/publishers to connect around book proposals.
- for academic book authors to find resources, advice and services (such as copyediting).
As far as I can tell, there is no existing platform, site or social network that fills this need. As a recent Medium piece argued that Almost Everything About Goodreads Is Broken. We talk about books on Inside Higher Ed, but the design and purpose of this community is not optimized to do the seven jobs listed above.
Here are my questions to you:
What do you think of the overall idea to build a book-centric platform targeted specifically at higher ed readers and authors?
Of the seven attributes that I list above, what is wrong and what is missing?
What sites and apps do higher ed people use now to discover, discuss, promote and catalyze books?
Can someone help in the process of taking an idea (and a blog post) to a real platform (app and website)?
What would I need in terms of resources, skills, people and funding to build and sustainably run this platform?
Any ideas about what this academic book-centric platform should be called?
Is there anyone out there who would be interested in joining this effort?
