Instructure, the parent company of learning management system Canvas, is introducing a new credential for educators who wish to demonstrate their mastery of the platform.
The Canvas Certified Educator Program was announced at the CanvasCon conference Wednesday. It is an online certification with two tracks -- one for K-12 and one for higher education.
“Canvas Certified Educator is a direct response to requests from our customers the past few years,” said Melissa Loble, chief customer experience officer at Instructure, in a press release. “They want to have a deeper knowledge of the platform and to have credentials and badges that certify their expertise with Canvas to facilitate professional development and career progression.”
The higher ed track is split into five courses, each priced at $355. Each takes approximately four weeks to complete.
Instructure also announced yesterday that Microsoft Teams will become the default conferencing tool in Canvas. As part of this integration, Microsoft and Instructure are working together to bring Canvas assignments and quizzes directly into Teams meetings.
Previously the default conferencing software was open-source application BigBlueButton. Instructors will still be able to use other videoconferencing tools.
“This collaboration is going to be focused on creating more elegant, better integrated ways for students to learn, collaborate, and stay engaged,” said Mitch Benson, chief product officer at Instructure, in the announcement. “We have an opportunity to enrich remote and hybrid learning not just in response to the challenges presented by the pandemic, but for the long-long-term.”
