A constitutional law professor who wrote a series of essays critical of China’s leadership has been suspended from teaching at Tsinghua University, one of China’s leading universities, the Financial Times reported. The reason for Xu Zhangrun’s removal from teaching duties is unclear, but his supporters and analysts pointed to his criticisms of the Chinese Communist Party leadership and a growing intolerance for criticism under President Xi Jinping.
The New York Times reported that Xu said he had been ordered by Tsinghua officials to stop all teaching and research and told his pay would be cut. He said he will be investigated by a university "work team," which will be looking into essays he has written since last summer.
