The University of Wisconsin at Madison's graduate program in engineering submitted incorrect data to U.S. News & World Report -- and as a result had its No. 14 spot stripped Wednesday. The graduate engineering program is now unranked.
U.S. News announced that Madison originally said that it received more applicants and admitted far fewer applicants than was the case. Madison's graduate engineering program actually received 6,172 applicants for the most recent admissions cycle. But originally Madison said it received 9,338. Further, Madison told U.S. News that it had admitted 833 applicants when the real number was 1,154. The combined incorrect information produced an admit rate of 8.9 percent when the real rate is 18.7 percent.
The university updated the press release it issued on the rankings two weeks ago and said that it reported the errors to the rankings operation at U.S. News. The updated press release does not say how the error occurred and the university declined to say. The statement does say: "Going forward, UW Madison is reviewing data reporting practices to ensure accuracy."
