Colleges and universities are increasingly employing companies to proctor online exams. If your institution plans to sign a contract with one or more online exam proctoring firms, here are the questions administrators interviewed by Inside Digital Learning said you should ask to secure the services that best meet your institution’s and learners’ needs.

Adel Leo, Western Governors University: "Ask lots of questions. Taking the easier route may not be the right route.”

Kathy Austin, Texas Tech University: “One of the best things to do is to carefully scrutinize the technology and its security. Also, look at how long they’ve been in business, check their references and talk to a lot of people about them.”

Kevin Nathanson, University of North Carolina: “There are different systems. That spectrum is so broad…The strictest one may not be optimal” for your students. Also: “You have to have the infrastructure set up for online proctoring.”

John Schmahl, CCCOnline: “Make sure you get a thorough understanding of the student experience. What are the student requirements? Make sure that’s clarified.”

Jennifer Lerner, Northern Virginia Community College: “We have on person interacting with the [proctor service], but at some institutions, faculty is talking with the company. That can lead to insistencies in service. We one person and one set of policies.”
