The Education Department on Monday released procedures for colleges to receive extra funds through campus-based aid programs for students who were accepted for enrollment in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. These programs include Perkins Loans and the Work-Study Program. The rules warn that colleges that took in fewer than 20 students may find the extra aid doesn't cover the costs of applying for it.
Louisiana may consider radical changes in higher education, given the needs created by Hurricane Katrina and the damage done to some public campuses, The Baton Rouge Advocate reported. At a legislative hearing Monday, state higher education officials said mergers, program eliminations, and layoffs were all possible.
A column criticizing black students, published in Winthrop University's student newspaper, has infuriated many black students at the South Carolina institution, prompting a forum attended by hundreds. The column, by a biracial student, said that black students failed to recognize the progress made in the United States since the civil rights movement and that white students censor their thoughts about black issues to avoid offending. The column said that these white students must feel the way black people did in the 1950s.
The Social Science Research Council has published "Questions That Matter," a new report reviewing key areas in which research is needed with regard to providing access to college to low-income students.
