Quintonio Legrier, 19, an engineering student at Northern Illinois University, was shot and killed last month by Chicago police officers. They were responding to a call from his family house, where Legrier was reportedly wielding a bat. Family members did not dispute the reports about the bat but said that Legrier had been suffering from mental health issues lately, and that was part of why his father sought police help. A woman who also lived in the same house was shot and killed as well.

Legrier's mother said that there was no reason for police to shoot him. "He was having a mental situation. Sometimes he will get loud, but not violent," she told ABC 7 News.

Joe King, a spokesman for Northern Illinois, said officials there were "shocked and saddened."

Another 19-year-old Northern Illinois student was shot and killed in Chicago Dec. 13, having just returned home for break.
