On Friday, hundreds of students at the University of Mississippi protested Confederate statues and markers that remain on campus, saying that they should be removed. The student group said in posters it distributed that the message sent to students, not fear of offending those who still revere the Confederacy, should be the deciding factor.

On Saturday, pro-Confederate groups rallied at the university to demand that the statues remain and that other references to the Confederacy be restored. The Clarion Ledger reported that, at the time of the pro-Confederate protest, six members of the basketball team knelt during the playing of the National Anthem.
