Alabama Uses App That Tracks Students in the Stadium
In an effort to keep fans in their student section seats, the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa has released an app that tracks students' location and offers incentives for students to stay the whole game.
Following displeasure at how quickly Crimson Tide fans vacate the game after the first half, Alabama has made moves to encourage students with chances at prizes like playoff tickets, reports The New York Times.
The tracking app has raised the eyebrows of watchdog groups and some students, suspicious of what this could mean going forward.
University officials assured those concerned that the app only tracks someone's location when they are inside the stadium and it can be closed or deleted when the user wants to go off the grid -- or at least back to their dorm room.
