Richard Corcoran, Florida’s education commissioner and former state House speaker, is included on a list of nine candidates to become Florida State University’s next president, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

If Corcoran were selected, he would be the third former House speaker to lead the public university in 20 years, following current president John Thrasher and former president T. K. Wetherell.

Several members of the university’s Presidential Search Advisory Committee expressed concern over Corcoran’s political ties and his current role on the system Board of Governors, the Sentinel reported.

“These conflicts can lead to a loss of accreditation” for the university, said Pam Perrewé, a committee member and Florida State professor. “Leading roles in higher education should not be treated as political pawns or a career reward for state political figures lacking other qualifications in higher ed administration.”

David Coburn, Florida State’s athletic director, and Sean Pittman, an attorney and lobbyist, were also on the list of candidates.
