The Board of Regents at Baylor University, a Baptist institution in Texas, approved a resolution last week that opens the door to possibly establishing a long-sought-after official LGBTQ+ student group on the campus.

The board's resolution, which was previously reported by the Waco Tribune-Herald and the Baptist Press, "reaffirms" several "core commitments" of the university. These include the "biblical understanding that sexual relations of any kind outside of marriage between a man and a woman are not in keeping with the teaching of Scripture," as well as Baylor's commitments to "the dignity and worth of all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity" and "to providing a welcoming, supportive educational environment based on civility and respect for all."

The resolution charges Baylor’s president and administration with determining “the appropriate pathways to provide additional care, connections, and community for Baylor’s LGBTQ students, including the possibility of establishing a new, chartered student group that is consistent with Baylor’s core commitments summarized above and the University’s policies and statements.”
