- Colleges and universities in the Florida Panhandle and along the Gulf of Mexico coastal region planned to be shut down today because of Sunday's arrival of Hurricane Dennis. Among colleges that announced that they would be closed today are Auburn University, Florida State University's Panama City campus, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Spring Hill College, the University of South Alabama, the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of Western Florida. One Florida institution, Pensacola Christian College, reported Sunday evening that the hurricane appeared to cause only minor damage in passing the campus, and that plans to house students in shelters Sunday night were no longer needed.
- As many as 270,000 applicants to the University of Southern California may have had some of their private information seen by a hacker. While university officials believe that few files were actually viewed, they are increasing security and trying to notify those who may be at risk.
