Brown University announced Wednesday that it will cover the textbook and course material costs of 1,100 students from low-income families in the 2019 academic year.

The program is an expansion of a one-year pilot program which covered the textbook costs for 85 low-income undergraduate students in their first year and found a positive impact on academic engagement.

Financial aid administrators will determine which students qualify for the program, which enables students to acquire all required textbooks and course materials from the Brown bookstore using their Brown ID card.

“The program gave me the freedom to choose classes without concern of financial strain,” a student who participated in the pilot program said in a press release.
