A police officer who was among the three people killed Friday in a shootout at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colo., was on the police force of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

A statement from the university said that Garrett Swasey (at right, pronounced /Sway’zee/), a six-year veteran of the campus police force, was on duty at the university when reports came in of an active shooter situation at the clinic. Because the campus police officers are sworn, state-certified police officers, they respond to such reports, and Swasey did so, and he was shot and killed in the incident at the clinic.

A profile of Swasey in The New York Times noted that Swasey was once a champion ice dancer who moved to Colorado Springs to train. He was described as a courageous officer, devoted to his wife and two young children, and to his church and Christian faith.
