A year ago, Birmingham-Southern University named Edward F. Leonard III president. On Friday, the college announced -- without offering a reason -- that Leonard was "vacating the position" immediately. Linda Flaherty-Goldsmith was named president. She has held a number of senior positions at colleges, including chief of staff to General Charles C. Krulak, who was named Birmingham-Southern president in 2011 and who has been credited with restoring some financial stability to the college. Krulak came in after the departure of David Pollick as president in 2010. Pollick had been president since 2004, but the college's finances appeared to fall apart in 2010 when it was revealed that the college had for years been spending more money than it had budgeted, in large part by giving students more financial aid than they had been entitled to.
