South Korean students and scientists are fighting a proposal to eliminate exemptions to compulsory military service for science and engineering graduate students, Nature News reported. Opponents argue that eliminating the exemptions could cause students to go overseas for their graduate degrees and decrease the country’s capacity for scientific research, including defense-related research. The defense ministry is seeking to eliminate military service exemptions of all kinds in response to a projected troop shortfall caused by a low birth rate.
