Pepperdine University has told the U.S. Department of Education that it no longer wishes to be exempt from Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and will abide by the antibias policy. Many Christian colleges, as Pepperdine is, asked for and received exemptions in the last two years, saying that the Education Department's view that Title IX bars discrimination against transgender and gay students violates the colleges' Christian faith. Title IX permits such exemptions for colleges that say some of the law's provisions violate their beliefs. Pepperdine's exemption goes back much farther.
A statement from the university said, "Pepperdine requested religious exemption from Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 in 1976, and it was granted by the Department of Education in 1985. Early this year, the university withdrew from the previously granted exemption because it does not fully reflect Pepperdine’s values today. We believe that Pepperdine’s mission and the goals of Title IX are aligned, and we are committed to complying with Title IX in its entirety."
