Part-time and full-time non-tenure-track faculty members at Northwestern University voted to form a union affiliated with Service Employees International Union, the union announced Tuesday. The vote took place last year, but a key group of contested ballots were not opened until earlier this month. A local National Labor Relations Board office certified the union last week. Alan Cubbage, university spokesperson, said he was “disappointed” in the NLRB regional director’s action, since additional contested ballots remain. Northwestern “will explore all available options for ensuring that those ballots are counted so that all voices are heard,” he added. At present, there are 229 votes in favor of the union and 219 opposed, with 25 additional ballots on appeal at the NLRB in Washington, according to Northwestern.
