American universities dominate a global list of the top utility patents (awarded by the U.S. for a process, machine, manufacture or composition of matter) awarded in 2016. While universities are rushing out press releases, precise comparisons may be off as some of the entities awarded patents cover entire university systems while others are for a single institution. The University of California (systemwide) is on top of the list at 505, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 278 and Stanford University at 244. The analysis -- available here -- was prepared by the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association.
