President Equated Sex Assaults and Gay Relationships

May 30, 2018

The president of Northwestern College in Iowa, a Christian institution affiliated with the Reformed Church in America, published a statement Friday in which he equated sexual assault with, among other things, gay relationships. The statement was a list of items of concern to President Greg Christy introduced with this sentence: "While there are many cultural issues that threaten to distort God’s vision for human flourishing, issues related to human sexuality are at the forefront." The Des Moines Register reported that after some alumni and others objected, Christy republished the statement, with sexual assault removed from the list. He told the Register that “In no way was I intending whatsoever to equate that sexual assault was in any way, shape or form equal to or the same as any of the other items that were listed."

The revised list (with sexual assault removed) states that "pornography, premarital sex, adultery, the objectification of women, and same-sex activity all exemplify the brokenness of sexual desire and expression."
