Last year, Simmons University announced that it would name its new College of Media, Arts and Humanities for the late Gwen Ifill, an alumna who as a journalist promoted the advancement of female and minority journalists. Many alumni and others have been protesting the selection of a white man, Brian Norman, as the college's first dean, The Baltimore Sun reported. As a result, some of the inaugural events for the college have been called off or postponed, although Norman is on the job. College officials said that they could not legally have restricted who could be considered for the position, but they could have done more to assure a diverse pool of those considered for the dean's position.
