McGill Drops 'Redmen' Team Name
April 15, 2019
McGill University, in Montreal, will change the name of its men’s sports teams from the “Redmen” after protests from students, faculty and staff who argued that the name is discriminatory, CBC reported. "Today, 'Redmen' is widely acknowledged as an offensive term for indigenous peoples, as evidenced by major English dictionaries," Suzanne Fortier, the principal and vice chancellor of McGill, said in a statement. Fortier said a steering committee will determine a new name for the teams.
