Parents Abandon Guardianship Scheme

August 22, 2019

Some of the parents who were trying to get more financial aid for their children by giving up guardianship have abandoned the process, ProPublica Illinois reported. The parents are in the Chicago suburbs, and ProPublica said that they numbered "more than a half dozen." They were not apologetic but spoke of the issues associated with the state and federal scrutiny.

“A lot of families are afraid to say what they are thinking,” said one mother, who spoke on the condition that she not be named. “They have OK incomes. But having a good income does not make you able to pay for college. I would have to not drink or eat to pay for my two boys.”
