Abortion medication will now be available at health centers at California's colleges and universities, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Public universities will be required to provide students access to medication abortions, which are effective during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.

Previously, students seeking medical abortions on university campuses were referred to nearby clinics.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law Friday. The bill will be in effect starting 2023.

Conservative and religious groups opposed the bill. Bishop Jaime Soto, president of the California Catholic Conference, issued an open letter that urged Catholics to pray for the defeat of the bill.

California's former governor, Jerry Brown, vetoed a similar bill last year prompting then Lieutenant Governor Newsom to say he would have signed it.
