California governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, has vetoed a bill that would have allowed districts to use the SAT or ACT instead of the state's required math and reading tests, EdSource reported.

In his veto message, Newsom said the tests “exacerbate the inequalities for underrepresented students” because performance “is highly correlated with race and parental income and is not the best predictor for college success.”
