Portland State Police Will Be Unarmed

Portland State University announced that its police force would be unarmed as of September, the Associated Press reported.

Students have been calling for the change for several years, ever since Portland State police shot and killed a Black man, Jason Washington, near campus. Witnesses said he was attempting to break up a fight between two other men and was shot while moving to pick up a handgun that had fallen from his holster. Washington had a concealed-carry permit for the weapon.
