A suite of resources designed to help institutions make sense of the digital courseware market is getting a refresh this semester to strengthen its standards on accessibility and offer more road maps for institutions seeking technology solutions.
Tyton Partners and the Online Learning Consortium introduced in 2016 the Courseware in Context (CWiC) Framework in an attempt to give faculty members and administrators better information about, and more leverage over, technology vendors vying for their dollars. New features this year include:
- Updates to the framework's Product Taxonomy to reflect market needs and industry standards on accessibility
- Case studies from institutions that have used the framework, including Southern New Hampshire University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte
- Opportunities for vendors to share self-reported data
- New guides to courseware adoption and total cost of ownership
- Revised quality indicators for assessing courseware implementation
Since launch, the open-source framework has been downloaded 600 times, and hundreds of additional users have perused the framework's Courseware Product Library, according to Gates Bryant, a partner in Tyton's strategic consulting practice.
In addition to higher ed institutions, vendors have also taken an interest, according to Bryant. The framework's executive committee considered adding a handful of seats this school year for vendor representatives, but all of the candidates declined because they "wanted it to be institutionally driven," Bryant said.
As of today, the Online Learning Consortium formally took over from Tyton as manager of the framework. Tyton felt that the membership structure of the Online Learning Consortium was best positioned to spread awareness of the framework.
