Officials at the U.S. Department of Education on Friday released the names of 20 colleges whose access to federal funds they have restricted because audits of those institutions uncovered various problems, most of which were “severe.”
The department named the remaining colleges that it had redacted from the list of colleges facing extra scrutiny known as heightened cash monitoring. Officials initially balked at releasing those names, citing ongoing investigations at those colleges.
Most of the newly identified colleges are small for-profit colleges and beauty schools.
Three public institutions are also on the list: Taylor Technical Institute, a two-year college in Perry, Fla.; Pike Lincoln Technical Center, which offers certificate programs in Eolia, Mo.; and Eastern Oklahoma State College, which is a community college in Wilburton.
Two of the institutions -- Jay’s Technical Institute, a for-profit beauty college in Texas, and St. Catharine’s College, a private nonprofit institution in Kentucky -- were identified as being on heightened cash monitoring, level 2, in an Inside Higher Ed story last week.
The department on Friday also updated its entire list of institutions facing cash monitoring. A dozen institutions have been removed from the list, including Long Island University, which had initially been on heightened cash monitoring, level 1, for concerns about its “financial responsibility.”
One college, Brewton-Parker College, a private nonprofit institution in Georgia, has been added to the list, the department said.
