College Board chief information officer Jeff Olson is joining the Education Department’s team in charge of implementing next year’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid, a department spokesperson confirmed exclusively to Inside Higher Ed Friday.
Olson "will support the FAFSA implementation team to strengthen internal systems and processes and bolster technical capabilities to help ensure optimal performance leading to the launch of the 2025–26 FAFSA form,” the spokesperson wrote in an email.
Olson’s appointment comes a week after the department announced its much-anticipated inaugural FAFSA czar would be College Board president Jeremy Singer, who will take temporary leave from his role at the nonprofit, which owns the SAT, to steward the new form through its second cycle after a disastrous launch year.
Olson and Singer are both longtime College Board officials with years of experience running the College Scholarship Service Profile, the FAFSA’s main private competitor. Like Singer, Olson’s position at the department will be temporary, and he will return to the College Board when it’s over.
