The University of Maine's basketball team lost badly against top-ranked Duke University as expected Saturday night, but Maine's athletes made a point before the game. They wore special T-shirts for the warm-up with the rainbow colors of the movement for gay and transgender rights. The shirts were designed with You Can Play, an organization that combats discrimination against LGBT people in athletics. The idea was to protest North Carolina's law HB2, which bars public universities and other state agencies from permitting transgender people to use any bathroom except that associated with their biological gender at birth. The law -- currently being challenged in court and which public universities are not enforcing -- also limits the ability of localities to institute antibias regulations.
