James H. Shelton, former U.S. deputy secretary of education, is joining 2U as the online program management company's first chief impact officer. Shelton will absorb some of the duties previously handled by chief executive and operations officers Chip Paucek and Rob Cohen, such as university relations and program implementation, Paucek said in an interview. 2U went public last year, and as its client base has grown, the company has “desperately needed” more C-level leadership, Paucek said.
Shelton said his responsibilities will also include working with employers to keep 2U's programs up-to-date on the needs of the private sector.
Shelton stepped down from the U.S. Department of Education in late 2014. He previously served as the program director for education for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and his résumé also includes stints with the consulting firm McKinsey & Company and the philanthropy firm NewSchools Venture Fund.
