The University of Brighton, in Britain, has sought to clarify that it is not promoting prostitution after a support organization for sex workers was given a booth at a fair for new students, the BBC reported.

The leader of the student union said the organization participated in the fair to provide support, not to advocate for sex work. The Sex Workers' Outreach Project describes itself as a “discreet and confidential” service for sex workers and promoted its attendance at the fair on Twitter, where it said, "1 in 6 students does sex work or thinks about turning to sex work. We can help." The group said it "never idealized sex work," but understood why students might turn to it and could offer support.

A university spokesman said it would be "exploring the matter further" with the student union. The spokesman said, "We would like to make it clear that the university does not promote sex work as an option to students."
