Two former students and a third woman who is now a faculty member at another institution are suing a former professor of East Asian languages and culture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, alleging sexual assault and bullying. The former professor, Gary Gang Xu, resigned last year, two years after a university investigation found that he'd had an inappropriate relationship with a student and then violated a no-contact order involving the student. Prior to his resignation, he was on paid leave and taught elsewhere, according to an investigation by NPR Illinois and ProPublica. Xu targeted female Chinese students because they were dependent on the university for their visa status, according to the lawsuit. He did not respond to requests for comment but has previously denied sexually assaulting anyone.
