The Department of Education is investigating whether the University of Maryland at College Park complied with a law requiring disclosure of foreign gifts and contracts, The Washington Post reported. A Sept. 26 letter from the Education Department expressed concern that the Maryland’s disclosures “may not fully capture” all gifts and contracts coming from foreign sources.

“Once the university learned that we were not reporting this information, we worked quickly to come into compliance,” Katie Lawson, a Maryland spokeswoman, told the Post. “We have been in compliance since January 2019, which was the next reporting deadline after we discovered we were not in compliance. We plan to work with federal officials in a transparent and timely manner to fully resolve these issues.”

The Education Department previously launched similar inquiries at Cornell, Georgetown, Texas A&M and Rutgers Universities. Higher education groups have expressed concerns about what they say is a lack of clarity surrounding the disclosure requirements.
