From Rachel Toor
In a recent Sandbox Live! conversation with a few dozen of my favorite presidents, I was nattering on about how awful the college and university presidency is these days. I shared stories I’ve heard that have given me nightmares—death threats, harassment of spouses and kids, instances of racism and sexism, the slings and arrows of haters—as well as the usual complaints about having to manage groups of people (boards and faculty) who are, let’s face it, unmanageable in a time when uncertainty is the air we all breathe.
Then a president raised a hand to stop my diatribe and said, “It’s hard, but it doesn’t suck.”
Right, of course. Presidents have limitless optimism, which is what helps them put up with this work. Nearly all of the leaders I talk to love their jobs. So I reached out to a whole bunch of them to ask what, beyond the obvious—students—makes it so great.
Here’s a big fat celebration of joy and fun for this Independence Day. History has its eyes on all of us. So, “Raise a glass to freedom/Something they can never take away.” (Maybe.)
