New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a plan Monday to increase the minimum wage for State University of New York workers to $15 an hour -- up from the current rate of $9 an hour.

The plan would affect some 28,000 employees and cost roughly $28 million once fully implemented. Wages will not rise overnight but will increase gradually. Starting in February wages will rise for many to $9.75 an hour, and by the end of 2018 all SUNY employees working in New York City will earn the $15 hourly rate. University employees statewide will earn the $15 hourly rate by 2021.

According to Cuomo's office, the SUNY Board of Trustees is expected to approve the minimum wage increase at its January board meeting. The change does not apply to the City University of New York.
