Science Groups Attack Reported Word Ban at CDC

December 18, 2017

Academic and science groups are attacking a reported Trump administration ban on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention using certain words and phrases -- such as "evidence-based," "science-based," "diversity" and "transgender" -- in budget documents. The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health released a letter to the Office of Management and Budget saying in part, "The reported policy flatly contravenes the mission of the agency, grossly violates the agency’s pledge to the American people and represents an appalling act of censorship. Leaving this policy in place would disrupt the agency’s critical work and, as a result, threaten the health of U.S. communities across the country."

The American Association for the Advancement of Science responded on Twitter.
