Indiana University is the latest university to announce the closure of its Confucius Institute. Indiana said closing the institute at its Indianapolis campus would ensure the continuation of IU’s Defense Department-funded Chinese Language Flagship program. The defense spending law passed last year prohibits institutions that receive DOD funding for Chinese language programs from hosting Confucius Institutes unless they receive a waiver. More than 10 U.S. colleges have announced closures of Confucius Institutes in the past year as the Chinese government-funded centers for language education and cultural programming have come under increasing scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers.
“Indiana University decided, effective on April 3, 2019, to close the Confucius Institute of Indianapolis based at [Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis],” the university said in a two-sentence statement. “This decision ensures ongoing operations of some programs within IU impacted by federal changes surrounding Chinese language programs.”
