Ousted from South Carolina State University in July, former president James Clark has filed suit against his former employer and the Board of Trustees, seeking $1.7 million for his termination.
The lawsuit, filed last week, seeks $570,000 in compensatory damages and another $1.2 million in punitive damages, according to WLTX, a Columbia, S.C., TV station.
WLTX reported that Clark believes he is owed a previously agreed-upon salary supplement and that he was fired due to a campaign of false criticisms leveled against him by the president of South Carolina State’s alumni association.
Clark served as president of South Carolina State from 2016 to 2021. In July, he was fired in a 10-to-3 vote by the Board of Trustees. His firing came mere months after an 18-to-2 no-confidence vote by the Faculty Senate in March 2021 amid ongoing enrollment declines and budget woes.
