President Biden signed into law a bill that restores education benefits to veterans who attended for-profit colleges that closed or lost their accreditation due to fraudulent or misleading practices. The bill also allows the Department of Veterans Affairs to recover federal funding paid out to such colleges.

The Veterans Rapid Retraining Assistance Program Restoration and Recovery Act gives the VA the authority to restore education benefits veterans are entitled to under the Veterans Rapid Retraining Assistance Program (VRRAP) when veterans have attended colleges that close or lose accreditation due to fraudulent actions. VRRAP is a federal program created under the American Rescue Plan that helps veterans access education needed to gain new skills to meet changing workforce demand.

“Every veteran deserves to access the full benefits they have earned as they pursue their postmilitary education,” said Representative Lauren Underwood of Illinois. “The Veterans Rapid Retraining Assistance Restoration and Recovery Act will restore important education benefits to veterans who have been ripped off by predatory institutions.”
