A series of “horrendous, antisemitic messages” threatening violence to Jewish students at Cornell University were posted on an independent discussion board Sunday, the university’s president, Martha J. Pollack, said in a statement late in the day. A building that houses the university’s kosher dining hall and a multicultural dining hall was reportedly singled out for possible attacks in other posts, although those had been removed by late Sunday.
Pollack said Cornell police officers were investigating and had alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
“Threats of violence are absolutely intolerable, and we will work to ensure that the person or people who posted them are punished to the full extent of the law,” Pollack said. “Our immediate focus is on keeping the community safe; we will continue to prioritize that.”
The statements appeared on a website called Greekrank, which has individual pages for specific colleges and universities. A post entitled “If I See Another Jew” was purportedly created by a user named Hamas. The poster threatened to murder Jewish men and rape Jewish women on campus and referred to Jews as “human animals,” a term reportedly used by Israel’s defense minister to describe Hamas fighters.
Cornell’s Hillel Center posted an Instagram statement urging students to avoid the building that houses the kosher dining hall.
