John Carroll University, in Ohio, will not be hosting its popular yet controversial annual drag show this year. University administrators made the decision following a negative column in the student newspaper that ran last year and divisive campus reception of the show, Cleveland.com reported.

The drag performance has been a staple of the student events calendar at the Jesuit university near Cleveland since 2013.

The column in question dismissed the show by saying it was flagrant and oversexualized. Some members of the LGBTQ+ community on campus labeled it as hate speech. The student newspaper defended the author's position, calling it a First Amendment issue.

Students in favor of the show say it is a celebration of diversity and representation on campus, while those in opposition say it goes against the teachings of the church.
