Drexel University agreed to pay the government $189,000 in a federal case involving a former professor who allegedly spent his grant money at strip clubs and sports bars in Philadelphia, the Associated Press reported. Federal prosecutors said Monday that Chika Nwankpa, the former professor of electrical and computer engineering, misappropriated grant money from the Navy, the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation spanning 10 years.

Drexel reportedly discovered the fraud in 2017 during an internal audit and informed the government. The university said in a statement that it has updated its auditing processes and takes “very seriously” allegations of misconduct. Nwankpa reportedly repaid more than $53,000 and resigned from the university in 2017 but has not been charged with a crime. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
