A space for conversation and debate about learning and technology

The main reason I go to the annual EDUCAUSE conference is to spend quality time with the educational technology vendors on the exhibitor floor. You can see an interactive map of all the companies signed up for a vendor booth at this link.

One of the best things about my job in learning technology is that I get to work in a library. How many of you have your physical offices inside your campus library? The future, I believe, will be the intermingling and merging of the academic library and academic technology disciplines. Even if academic technology and academic library services remain organizationally independent, our daily work and strategic goals will become increasingly intertwined.

Listening to the inauguration speech of Dartmouth's new President, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, marks one of the more inspiring moments in my career as a learning technologist.Dr. Kim talked about learning. We learning technologist love to talk about learning. We inject learning theory and learning research into our talks and workshops on technology. In our collaborations with faculty we always try to talk first about learning and teaching goals, and only then about what technologies best support these goals.

If the MacArthur Genius Program gave awards to institutions I'd be that Abilene Christian University would be a shoo-in. The university's mobile initiative demonstrates that small places can lead in terms of innovation. Learning technology is one place where any college or university that is willing to take risks, and share their experiences, can make a huge splash in the world of learning, teaching and technology.

"Mad Men" won the Emmy for best drama Sunday night, the second year in a row that the show has captured this award. I know that you are wondering the same thing that I am. If they can make a great TV show about people in advertising set in the early 1960s how come they don't make a show about learning technologists working today? I mean, our lives have as much drama as Don Draper, Pete Campbell, Joan, Peggy and the rest of the Mad Men crew.

I know that the higher education community is a priority for you. Your higher ed site is really nice. Many of my colleagues use (and teach with) your products on a daily basis. The Adobe eLearning Suite is essential software for many folks involved in designing and delivering technology enabled learning.

TED talks pose all sorts of challenges and opportunities for those of us in higher education. The quality of the freely available content gives lie to the notion that the best lectures occur within the gates of academe. The format of the talks can teach us a thing or two about the optimal length, timing, pace and content of the lecture. And the conversations around the online lectures remind us that the degree to which learning is social.

I was heartened to see Zemsky put learning at the top of his list of the tough issues facing higher education, ahead of attainment and money. Zemsky outlines some of the typical challenges faced by colleges and universities in supporting student learning and measuring the results. He writes that, "there is a growing suspicion -- and in some quarters an already angry conviction -- that all is not well with the learning enterprise."

Have you seen Wick Sloan's piece "Teaching After Midnight," on his experience with his late night teaching at Bunker Hill Community College? This is a great essay, one that I hope my learning technology colleagues take the time to check out.

A transformative step that learning technologists can participate in proposing, pushing, guiding, leading, managing and maintaining would be providing a campus-wide blogging platform and institutional aggregation site. Here are some guidelines for what this could look like:
