Previously, I asked why folks choose to work in higher education. Since then, I've gotten a number of emails containing individual stories, individual reasons.It seems that reasons why folks end up working for colleges and universities are all over the map. Some general categories will certainly emerge but, as that continues to happen, let me share my own story.Or, at least, let me share the first half. There are two reasons I ended up working for Greenback U; one that was immediate, and one slightly longer term.

The deal is that for $25 bucks less, or $114, Amazon will sell you a Kindle that displays "special offers and sponsored screensavers". Amazon promises to keep ads out of books, only showing the promotions on the bottom of the home screen and when the Kindle goes into screensaver mode.

Recently, two events engendered some serious self-reflection on my “why I am in the teaching profession” question: two landmark sexual harassment cases against colleagues and the sudden death of a retired Political Science professor. They expose the lack of a clear sense of private/public boundaries among academics with respect to their students, and the good or evil that arises from it.

“I want to go to aftercare!” This comes up in our house periodically. The aftercare program at my kids’ school is good, I hear parents say. Many parents from our immediate neighborhood choose to send their kids there, so many of the kids are friends my kids have known since they were very young. The program includes outside playground time every day, snack, a choice of games, crafts, activities. The kids do their homework together, order pizza, have movie afternoons. There’s a talent show at some point in the year.

The department of journalism at the public National University of La Plata (UNLP) has presented a controversial award to Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, spotlighting the close ties between politics and journalism advocated by university authorities who are in sync with the national government. The award sparked a debate on the role of higher education institutions in preparing future journalists.

In the next two to three years, we will see a level of personnel movement in higher ed that will dwarf anything we’ve seen since the 1960’s.I’m basing this on two observations. The first is the increasing median age of full-timers in higher ed, especially on the administrative side. The second is the extinction of pay raises.

On the news recently there was mention of a scavenger hunt that will be held in the New York Public Library as part of the centennial celebration of the magnificent Stephen A. Schwarzman building. I am one of a legion of fans of this magnificent building and I am even more appreciative of the incredible collection housed in the building. My relationship with the Public Library goes back to when I was a little kid and always excited to go to my local library and pick out another book to read.

I imagine that selling to educational institutions must be a challenge. We don't make decisions quickly. It is often difficult to identify the true decision maker. The consensus and collaborative culture of academic technology means that many people have a voice and veto, but only a few can green light (and fund) any purchase decision.
