It is with appreciation and a sense of fulfillment that I write this special editor’s note to share my decision to retire from Inside Higher Ed, effective Friday, July 28. It is hard to believe that 20 years ago, a big idea I had with Doug Lederman and a few others would become what is now Inside Higher Ed—a dynamic publication covering all of higher education and read by more than two million people each month.
I have had the pleasure of working with hundreds of outstanding journalists, engaging with countless higher education leaders and faculty, and talking with remarkable policy makers about what is happening in higher education and what more needs to be done.
But of all our stakeholders who have inspired me (and, yes, periodically kept me up at night), it has been our readers who have served as my main motivator. From the enthusiastic handshakes at industry conferences to the passionate letters to the editor, I am truly humbled by the extraordinary people who comprise higher education and with whom I have had the opportunity to talk over these many, many years. Your passion and care for the next generation of learners have been unwavering and heartening. Thank you.
It’s been an incredible journey, and I am thrilled about the path ahead for Inside Higher Ed. I can’t imagine leaving it in better hands than our current team. I would not—no, could not—retire if I did not have unwavering confidence in its future, which I hold now more than ever. Take care! Be well. I will spend my newfound time traveling and volunteering. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for allowing me to be part of this dynamic and committed higher ed community.
