Howard University is distancing itself from an unidentified professor who apparently wrote in a syllabus that family deaths were no excuse for missing exams. The syllabus -- reported on by the Daily Mail after someone identifying herself as a student posted it on Reddit -- says, “There will be no makeup exam, quizzes or assignments” and, “Please don't bring me doctors'/death certificates, funeral obituaries I will no accept these [sic]. I also cannot make exceptions for jobs, birthdays, dates with celebrities, etc.”
Signaling that students should be clairvoyant, the syllabus also says, “If you have a conflict or think that your grandmother, grandfather, uncle, cousin etc. may die you should talk to me the first day of class; however, I will most likely suggest that you drop the course or find a way to reschedule your outside conflict.”
Anthony Wutoh, provost, said in a statement Sunday that the university “does not endorse the statements attributed in this document.” As Howard investigates, he said, the incident “should not reflect poorly on the entirety of our faculty, who are committed, compassionate and dedicated to the training and development of all of our students.”
